Focussing on your goals is an important part of achieving them. You need to know where you are going and to keep it front of your mind at all times. So you need to make sure that you have a lot of positive reasons for doing what you are doing and spend time thinking about them.

Moving away from pain is very different. Moving away from pain is a basic impulse that we learn at a very early age. It is very powerful, for most people it is more powerful than moving towards pleasure. you come across a major obstacle on your journey towards you goals, you may need the extra impulse of moving away from the pain of your current situation to keep you battling on until you break through the barrier.

Many high achievers are driven to move away from some pain in their lives. However these people do not always lead happy and fulfilled lives…


Being motivated by pain can also be dangerous. Generally the thing that is causing you pain is something that you don’t want. If you focus on it, end up getting it, just like you will if you focus on what it is you do want. Your mental software has a bug that omits the word not and gives you what you are focussing on. Use moving away from pain with caution and balance it with moving towards pleasure as often as possible.
