Modern Materials Improve Fine Bubble Diffusers used in Wastewater Aeration Aciphex Dosage
Since an English inventor filed a patent on a porous ceramic fine bubble diffuser in 1913. In sewage treatment plants from Chicago to Singapore in 2007 new diffusers very similar to those from almost a century ago are still being put to use. Such diffusers were and still are subject to problems from clogging and loss of oxygen transfer efficiency over time.
In the 1980’s companies started introducing diffusers which utilized non-porous media such as perforated EPDM rubber and flexible plastics instead of porous ceramics. The thought behind the change was that canada prescription non-porous materials would be less prone to clogging, which did turn out to be the case. However the materials themselves tended to degrade faster than the porous ceramic diffusers which were the norm until that time.
Through the 1990’s, improvements were made particularly in the compounding of EPDM membrane diffusers to the point where in many cases they would last 7 or more years before requiring replacement. However even the best quality EPDM rubber protonics diffuser is still prone to attack by chemicals, solvents, fats, oils and greases, and there are further process limitations which have tended to make tube diffuser’s membranes less reliable than disc diffuser’s membranes.
SSI(Stamford Scientific International, Inc.), one of America’s leading bubble diffuser manufacturers led the charge to develop new materials which are resistant to fouling, clogging, prevpac material degradation. After 5 years of R & D, in 2004, SSI introduced a revolutionary new PTFE coating for EPDM membrane diffusers.
A PTFE coated surface cured to the EPDM substrate results in an impermeable barrier layer which protects the EPDM, and at the same time the non-stick properties of the PTFE fine bubble diffusers resists calcium fouling and scaling on the membrane surface.
In practice the PTFE coated diffusers have proven nothing short of miraculous for the sewage treatment plants and industrial wastewater treatment plants that have installed them. SSI’s study of high technology materials has yielded other breakthroughs, as well. The company is introducing a new diffuser it calls an Ultra Fine Bubble product. This product has a special hybrid coating which changes the bubble surface tension significantly, malox a sandwiched fabric layer in the middle of the membrane. This results in bubble sizes which are smaller than any competitive product, and we can produce this diffuser at a highly competitive price. Oxygen transfer efficiencies are in the range of 20% better than our already highly efficient fine bubble disc diffusers.
Work continues on new developments in compounding and surface treatments to enable further improvements in SSI diffusers’ lifetime, efficiency and chemical resistance.
